Her spectacular career was launched when she was 18. She won the first New
Talent Singing Contest in 1982. She then entered Capital Artist Record Company
and had stayed there ever since. With the song "Homecoming" in 1984, she
got more recognition and praise. In that same year, she had tried her acting
ability by taking the supporting role in "Behind the Yellow Line", which
had given her her first film award-the Best Supporting Actress. Many people
started to love her at that time. In 1985, "Bad Girl" was released and it
was a huge success. It put Anita at the pinnacle and became the "Big Sis"
in the business. She attracted everybody with her singing and dancing. Not
many singers could danced as she did. Her dancing became a trademark for
Anita and a standard for all live performers.
In 1987, she won the Golden Horse Best Actress award. With this award, she
had proved to everyone that she can act as well as sing. In Christmas time
that year, she held her record breaking concert, which was 28 consecutive
nights. The concert was titled "Ever-changing Anita - Showing all her Glamour".
From then on, ever-changing became another trademark of hers. With the Golden
Horse award and the record breaking concert, her status as the pop queen
was established.
Anita did not only get popularity in HK, she had gained it aboard too. After
the concert in 87/88, she held a concert in Taiwan. She was the first HK
star who gave solo concert in Taiwan. It was very successful and she held
some other concerts in Taiwan later. In 1988, she was invited to attend and
sing in the opening ceremony in the Seoul Olympics. She was nominated the
Best Actress in Tokyo International Film Festival in 1991 with the film "Au
Revoir, Mon Amour". In April 16, 1992, CNN compared her singing career with
Diana Ross and Madonna. Two days later, the Mayor of San Francisco declared
April 18, 1992 as "Anita Mui Day". This was to honor her contributions to
the society by raising funds for the Nursing Home which bears her name. Oct.
26, 1993 was again declared as "Anita Mui Day" in San Francisco.
In 1993, Anita Mui "True Heart" Charity Foundation was established. She held
a charity concert in Toronto and a charity dinner part in HK to raise funds
for the foundation.
