Ann Mui Oi Fong recently brought her eldest son to visit her family. Her eldest is almost 4, and the younger is 2 and a half. The 18th of next month will be her 5th anniversary, she will be in Canada but will not celebrate. Since getting married, Mui Oi Fong and her husband's relationship is getting better and better. As for her younger sister, Mui Oi Fong says marriage is a difficult thing to figure out, just like she and her ex boyfriend of 8 years still breaking up at the end, with her current husband they dated shortly then got married. Although Mui Oi Fong hears woman should still have a career after marriage, but she feels it is not important for woman to have money or career, as long as there is a husband who loves her. So for her, family always comes first.
Ann Hui bitterly laughed as her emotion went joy to now pain because the first several days of shooting the situation was still chaotic, first Anita Mui fell ill, then Leon Lai's schedule was affected by other films and delayed arriving in Shanghai, leading to changes in notices. As for the Mainland crew, Ann pointed out they put effort in their work, but there was still lack of chemistry in communication, which she still was unable to adjust. She pointed out everyone wanted to make this film good, just for the 30's and 40's props they found 10,000 pieces, but she knew due to the time and budget she wasn't allowed to go overdetailed, making her on controls even more difficult. But after several days, she was satisfied with the cast's performance, especially Ge You, but Ann made fun of him, saying he was more nervous then she was, constantly talking with her about the script and would not let her leave until early morning, there was a time she had to adjust to the lack of time and turned down Ge You's request to discuss the screenplay.
When speaking of Ah Kam and its disappointing Hong Kong box office, as the film closed with only HK$1,000,000, Ann Hui is also surprised, never thought of the film could end up like this.
Anita Mui arrived in Shanghai for the new film, but due to her sore throat, she fell ill before work even began. Ah Mui knew early only this illness would kick in, so she brought enough doctor prescribed medicine, unfortunately it had no effect. After one overnight session, she began to come down with a mild fever and couldn't talk loud. So the first day of filming she didn't force herself, as she didn't want lacking results, but the next night the illness worsen as she lost her voice completely. Ah Mui pointed out there would still be a pile of work waiting, as she planned after finishing this film to complete recording two albums then hospitalize herself since after throat surgery the doctor asked her to rest for 3 months in order to keep her voice in good shape.
This time Ah Mui has 20 scenes in the film, but her part has less scenes than Ng Sin Lin. Ah Mui doesn't mind starring as the secondary female lead as upon receiving the script she liked the character alot and it has been a long time since she held a script in her hand to study a character. Ah Mui also points out Ann Hui On Wa's sincerity is also one of the reasons she took the role, she knows Ann wanted to make this film for a decade and she is happy to help an artist complete her dream. Plus she heard the Shanghai investment company and Ge You both admire her and wanted her for the role, so no matter how difficult, even with less money she would give her all for the role, but she still requested her name to be listed separately.
Reportedly the film will be attending many film festivals, would she mind if she will compete for the Best Supporting Actress? Ah Mui says she doesn't mind. If her role is increased just for an award, she would be unhappy.
Leon Lai is still in Shanghai filming Boon Sun Yuen, but in days he will stop for a couple of days and fly to Holland and England for his world tour. Completing these two stops, Leon will return to Shanghai to continue filming, then he will leave again for the North America and France for tour dates. Running around like this, does Leon worry about lack of concentration on his performance? Leon says he is psychologically prepared for the film and knows the situation so he isn't worry about the tour affecting the film. As for Ann Hui, she knew about the schedule long ago and everyone will try to work around it. Leon will need a hair cut before shooting but this time not as short as it was in Comrade, almost Love Story (Tim Mut Mut). Actually earlier he has tried a crew cut but no one noticed. Even if he has to shave his head Leon wouldn't mind, but he first has to look at the script to see if the character has potential, another important point is how attractive is the salary because after shaving his head, it may affect other projects, so salary wise it must be enough to cover his losses. Leon says years ago a famed Taiwan director invited him to make a film but he has to shave his head which would affect him as then he just signed with Polygram and there was no way for him to go to shoot an album cover BALD so he could only abandon the opportunity.
Ng Sin Lin has some impressions of Shanghai from the last time she was working there. This time she is excited about working with Ge You and Anita Mui. Before filming, Siu Sin already memorized the novel and the script. She feels acting in films based on novels are more difficult because the audience already has a set image of the characters in the book, but she still feels the most difficult to play are historical figures, mainly because historical figures has a set impression in every one's mind. If one decides to be creative with the character, the audience may not necessarily accept.
This time in Boon Sun Yuet, Siu Sin has a scene in which she is raped by Ge You. Siu Sin says to now she still doesn't know how the scene will be handled since the scene will lead into later plot developments. Although it isn't a strong point, it is still rather important. So she hopes it would be done conservatively but not like in older films where similar scenes were handled with a rose falling onto the ground and then stepped upon. Later she will discuss this scene with Ann Hui On Wa and Ge You.
Also Siu Sin in the movie will be paired up with Leon Lai, is there any passionate scenes? Siu Sin says there will be kissing scenes but they would be minor in order to fit into the 30's/40's environment. She smilingly says, "Actually the dating scenes will be mostly holding hands and taking slow walks, which feels more like the way back then. It is more comfortable to watch!"
"Actually I am really lucky, every time it is a director, each filled with experience, each with their own successes, especially in those each specializes, the types are totally different." Speaking of this year's actresses, Lai Ming adds, "Maggie Cheung Man Yuk, Anita Mui Yim Fong, Ng Sin Lin, Anita Yuen Wing Yi, each film has a Best Actress, although I haven't even been nominated yet, I still get to work with them, I must be really lucky!"
In a short while he will have to go to Shanghai for Boon Sun Yuen, Leon cannot stop praising director Ann Hui On Wa's approach in Summer Snow (Nui Yun Sei Sap), having a normal life side, but not purposely making it up, a side of tragedy within the comedy, it would take a lot of patience to make, so it is no wonder it won awards.
But this time he is working with Ann Hui, he doesn't dare to get his hopes up because the film has masters like Ge You, Anita Mui etc. Their acting experiences are all higher than his, he is happy just to be a part of it, as he is satisfied with just doing his part to the best and handing the film to the others. In Siu Nin Doe Sun, Gigi Leung Wing Kei and Leon play a pair of "classmates" who grew up together and fell for each other, so she has to wear a long hair wig to look a little more mature. Francis Ng Chun Yu also has to wear a wig. His character design actually came from an Italian model (Fabio?), beside wearing the head gear, he would also have to wear make up base, eyebrow liner, lipstick, and blue contact lenses. Although it looks cool and handsome, he is afraid of going through the process every time, saying, "Why don't you go ask Adam Cheng Siu Chau about the fear of wearing a wig!"
She also reveals she would be going to Shanghai later for Boon Sun Yuen (Half Life Fate) in which she and Anita Mui Yim Fong play sisters. She believes she and Ah Mui will get along fine. When she first entered the scene many feels she and Ah Mui looked alike. She feels they don't look the same but their personalities are close, as they are the same kind of people. For the film, she purposely tanned herself darker because director Ann Hui On Wa hopes the film's Shanghai ladies of the 40's don't look sickly, but full of energy. Siu Sin all along has been playing depressing character, actually in private she is very active. She is also very happy she gets to work with Ge Ye, although she doesn't get much scene time with him, she can still learn from him and Ah Mui.
Later she would also be in the Chinese New Year film 1997 Ga Yau Hei Si (1997 All's Well Ends Well) with Stephen Chiau Sing Chi. This is her first time working with Sing Jai. Some says Sing Jai is hard to get along with. Siu Sin says her part doesn't play opposite Sing Jai much, so she believes there will be no problems; plus she and Sing Jai will definitely not create any rumors, since she has publicly announced she has a boyfriend, Sing Jai himself is rumored to have a girl friend. Actually since entering the scene Siu Sin has never been rumored with any of the actors. She feels whether rumors comes depends on one's attitude. Emotions are strange. If she doesn't give another hints, others would not have the opportunity, even if the others are dropping hints toward her, she would just pretend they are acting. Henceforth while filming everyone treats her like a brother and there is no rumor.
